Unit 1: Who Am I?

This course is designed to help people gain a deeper appreciation for themselves by examining what God thinks about them as an individual, why they act the way they do, why they feel and react like they do. Then practical advice is given as to how to control their anger and responses and how to master their emotions and thoughts.

A Sense of Self is divided into four units with each unit containing three or four lessons. (See below)

Unit 2: Understanding Our Behavior
Unit 3: Understanding Our Feelings
Unit 4: Understanding How We Think

A Sense of Self contains a total of 13 lessons in 4 units. Each lesson is presented as a video you can view online or download, and a text version you can read online or download.

We recommend watching the video (about 30 minutes long) and then reading the lesson. After you read the lesson, you can take a quiz to make sure you have learned the essential material before moving on to the next lesson. We also recommend going in sequential order with the units and corresponding lessons as they build upon each other.

Once you start the course, stay with it to the end. Go at your own pace and enjoy the learning experience! If you have questions about the material, please email us. You will find a link toward the bottom of each page to "Submit Question".

Congratulations for embarking on a path that will change you from the inside out. A happier, more fullfilling life is our goal!

1. Why Did I Do That?

As you worked through Unit 1, you learned about three ways of viewing the world: the atheistic, agnostic and Christian world views. You also learned about the "new life" that is available to the Christian. Now you are ready to begin a new unit on behavior. Since this is the "New Life Behavior" course, our central theme is how a "new life" or "new life thinking" can impact our behavior. In this first lesson we will ask the title question: "Why did I do that?" We will look at how thinking and feeling lead to behaving.

2. Trust, Distrust and Human Development

In lesson 1 of this unit,  we learned how thinking and feeling influence behavior. We also learned about the "Four G's: Genes, Groups, Guidelines, and Goals". In this lesson we will look at the origins of our behavior and how it develops from infancy to old age.

Even though it is true that we are free to determine our behavior, there are definite influences that enhance or repress productive behavior.

3. Parent and Family Influences

In this lesson we will study two more family factors of behavior: "Family Systems" and "The Bible and Parental Behavior."

As young children we are very dependent on and attached to our family, especially our mothers. When given a choice, children will probably choose to stay in a dysfunctional family rather than move to a healthy family.

4. Human Needs and Values

We are designed by God, to glorify God and return to God. We are also designed as souls to operate as achievers and live the abundant life. Therefore, all of us have an inner drive to live at our highest level: physically, socially, mentally and spiritually. As our primary needs are met, we will aspire and behave so as to fulfill our higher level needs.

3. Handling Our Anger

We will learn that we do not have to be a victim of our own anger. We have included some Biblical examples of how anger was handled and what is meant when the term "slow to anger" is used. We will learn the difference between holding in anger and holding back anger, how to be one who FACES anger problems with others effectively and how to handle someone who is angry with CLASS!

1. As a Person Thinks

Paul tells us that when we come to Christ and allow him to change our inner man, then we will think and act like Christ. (Romans 6:4; Galatians 2:20; and Philippians 2:5) This first lesson will examine how we think. If we can better understand how we think we can better understand why we behave the way we do. Remember, "As a person thinks in his heart, so he behaves." (Proverbs 23:7)

2. I Think I Can, Therefore I Can

If we think that we are or can do something special, then we most likely will do it. There is a children's story of the "Little Train That Could." None of the big, powerful trains could climb the big hill, but the little train, as he started up the hill, kept saying, "I think I can, I think I can...", and he made it all the way to the top of the big hill. We are like that little train; if we think that we can, we will. If we think we will fail, we will.

3. Our Inner Struggle-The Conscience

Our conscience is not a physical organ like the brain or heart. It is part of that force the brain generates called the mind. It is not something that can be corrected or removed by surgery. It is not something at which a doctor can point and say, "This is a conscience." It is part of that invisible aspect of us, that makes us what we are. It is part of our mind. It is part of our personality. It is part of our soul.
