Our background

NewLife Behavior. as a minstry, has been helping individuals to be reconciled to God, family, and community since 1984. It has its roots in 2 Corinthians 5: 12-21. We are to be reconciled to God and then become ambassadors for Christ. This two-fold mission forms the basis of our work.

Starting as a Dallas, Texas based prison ministry, NLBI has evolved into a comprehensive service ministry reaching out to people of all walks of life.  In August 1984, Dr. H. M. Motsinger, an educator and counselor, accepted the call to write a curriculum that would assist prison inmates to change their attitudes and actions.  After four years of writing and teaching inmates, Head Chaplain, Emmett Solomon asked Dr. Motsinger to quit teaching the inmates and start training others men and women to teach the curriculum.  By this time the term NewLife Behavior had been given to the ministry.

Impressed by NewLife’s structure, curriculum and result, TDCJ officials requested an extension of the program to inmates’ families.  With the help of chaplain Bill Brewer, a pilot effort was launched in 1993.  Wives, and in some cases children, were invited into prison classrooms for families studies using the NLB curriculum.  The family unit, subsequently, FamilyNet became a part of the programs offered.

In 1994, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice endorsed its placement in all Texas prisons.  This led to offering a training conference in 1996 to prepare additional instructors.  In the same year, a request came from a missionary just back from Perm, Russia.  The request was the beginning of many to use the courses outside the US.

In 1997 NLB won the Governor George Bush Award as the Best State Jail program in Texas.  With the expansion of the ministry to several states by 1998 and with the assistance and guidance of the Skillman church of Christ, NLB became a non-profit organization with its own board of trustees.

In 2000, Christians Against Substance Abuse, led by Buck Griffith and NLB began combining efforts to magnify their impact inside and outside of prisons.  By this time many instructors of the NLB curriculum were teaching the lessons not only at the prisons but also in their churches.  In some cases officers were using the lessons to solve problems in their own families.

Starting in 2002, Griffith was named president of NLBM and Motsinger gave his time to developing the international side of NLB.

In the years since, ministers in at least 50 countries have requested a copy of the free CD with the NLB curriculum.  Known active programs are underway in Russia, Zambia, Nigeria, South Africa, Ukraine, Philippines, and Mexico. In these countries the curriculum may be used in the churches, universities, high schools, prisons, orphanages and with interested individuals.

In the United States NLB is used primarily in congregations, prisons and with family members of prisoners.
